DESCRIPTION

The need to develop a non-destructive technique which allows understanding of the state of preservation of a wooden element and its residual mechanical properties (parameters of resistance and deformability) has given rise to the need to develop a useful and manageable tool that can provide reliable information regarding material quality. The Wood Pecker rebound hammer is an enhancement to a type N concrete rebound hammer, to which a rectified tempered steel needle is added (hardness 60 HRC), with diameter 2.5 mm circular section and length 50 mm, with a truncated conical tip end with a 35° angle of inclination. The instrument is compact and particularly manageable in on-site materials use for its weight (about 1100 grams). 

SPECIFICATIONS

The Wood Pecker rebound hammer is a penetrometer that uses a rebound hammer fitted with a needle which is driven into the wood tissue with a predetermined number of strokes. It is possible to correlate the sinking of the needle to mechanical characteristics, to the nature of the wooden material and to its preservation within the tested element. The steel needle is easily removed from the percussion rod in order to permit verification of the hammer to the calibration anvil. The needle penetrates the wooden body after a predetermined number of strokes and remains driven in until measurement is completed. The extent of penetration is measured by a specific detection system. 

Once measurement has been completed, the penetration rod can be easily recovered from the wooden body and the faint trail left by its imprint can be easily sealed with a special resin.

FIELD OF APPLICATION

The Wood Pecker mechanical rebound hammer is most often used in the verification of historical buildings. Knowledge regarding the preservation of wood elements is of particular interest for investigations that must be carried out prior to any structural restoration or rehabilitation. In the case of historical buildings and monuments, even alternating extracting of the micro cores of an element (even if of limited lengths) is almost always impossible for artistic preservation purposes, to avoid compromising the integrity of the section. Knowledge regarding preservation of the entire section is an absolutely necessary condition since, in almost all cases, the aggressive effects of micro-organisms (fungi, xylophagous, moulds, etc.) that attack on the essence of wood are not detectable with evident signs.
