DESCRIPTION
The mechanical rock test rebound hammer was created in the DRC research laboratories as the result of experimentation carried out in collaboration with the UniverGeohammersità Politecnica delle Marche, where different families of stone materials were examined. The Geohammer mechanical rebound hammer is the only instrument available on the market today that can provide correlation between the rebound hardness scale values measured and the compression resistance of the rock tested. The Geohammer rock rebound hammer is an easy to use instrument that produces accurate and reliable data about the quality of the material tested.
SPECIFICATIONS
The mechanical rebound hammer consists of an aluminium cylindrical body that houses a steel hammer inside. This hammer, when moved by a spring, contrasts a percussion rod in contact with the concrete testing surface. This is pressed on the surface up to its stroke limit. At the same time, the internal mass, guided by the sliding rod and pulled by the spring, hits the material, bouncing at a certain distance which is signalled by an index on a graduated scale.
STANDARDS
ASTM D5873-00
UNI EN 12504-2
FIELD OF APPLICATION
The rebound hammer method field of application or rebound index can mainly be used for on-site tests carried out for engineering, design and construction, in particular for:
Qualitative surveys of the state of rock material homogenization
Resistance measurement of rock materials through an evaluation of uniaxial unconfined compression
The evaluation of rock material alteration through relationships between the rebound indexes respectively on the walls of joints (discontinuity at which marked sliding between the sides is not observed) and on a fresh surface of the same rock obtained by segregation
The assessment of the JCS coefficient (Joint wall compressive strength)
An estimate of the rate of penetration for mechanical milling at full section.
It should still be noted that, in rock masses, the local stress condition is that of "confined elements" and is therefore multi-axial, so that correct reading of the rebound hammer indexes would in general require further correlation curves, which would have to be arranged between the single and multi-axial stress states.
